On October 18, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand hosted the "China day" event at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Lyu Jian, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana attended and addressed the event. More than 200 envoys to Thailand and representatives to UNESCAP, regional directors of United Nations organizations and UN international staff attended the event.

Ambassador Lyu reviewed the achievements of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the great contributions China has made to global development over the past 70 years. He said that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In just 70 years, China has made a great leap from standing up, to growing rich, to becoming strong, and created a miracle of development in human history.

Ambassador Lyu noted that the current growth of global economic uncertainty, the backlash against globalization and the rise of trade protectionism have brought challenges to the world economy as well as China's economy. All countries should work together to support multilateralism and the building of an open world economy. China's economy is resilient. The supply side structural reforms continue to unleash endogenous power; the development concept of innovation has significantly enhanced the quality and efficiency of development; and the ecological environment has improved significantly. China's economy will maintain a stable, rapid and sustainable development. The Chinese people are confident and capable of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. China is bound to make greater contributions to all mankind.

Ambassador Lyu stressed that in May this year, China and the UNESCAP signed a memorandum of understanding on the "Belt and Road" cooperation during the 2nd "Belt and Road" International Cooperation Summit. The two sides will adhere to the concept of being open, green and honest, and deepen cooperation in infrastructure, transportation, trade, energy, innovation and other fields to jointly promote the comprehensive implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in the Asia Pacific region.

Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said that over the past seventy years, and especially during the four recent decades of 'reform and opening up', China's development journey has been phenomenal. It has made a major contribution to global poverty eradication and the attainment of millennium development goals. About 800 million people were lifted out of extreme poverty. As China's involvement in international affairs has grown, so too has its contribution to the United Nations. Where sustainable development is concerned, it has a crucial role to play in accelerating the region's progress towards the 2030 SDGs. UNESCAP will continue with strengthened all-round cooperation with China, especially in the areas of connectivity and infrastructure construction, clean energy and poverty reduction. He wished China greater achievements in its development.

Guests attended the photo exhibition of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and enjoyed cultural performances, including tea art, calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, folk music and Chinese ancient and modern dance, presented by artists from Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan and Hunan, and the Chinese Cultural Center in Bangkok. They expressed their appreciation for this good opportunity to acquaint them with a China that is both traditional and modern, dedicated to innovation and green development, with its arms wide open to the world. They believed that the "China day" event would also inspire them to explore and contemplate rich lessons achieved in the course of China's 70 years' development.
