From 10:00 PM on December 31, 2024, to 12:00 AM on January 1, 2025, the large-scale New Year's Eve prayer ceremony for the Buddha Tooth Relic from Beijing Lingguang Temple was grandly held at Sanam Luang Square (The Royal Field) in Bangkok. The Minister of Culture of Thailand, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, presided over the ceremony on behalf of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Also in attendance were the Deputy Supreme Patriarch, Somdet phra maharatchamongkhonlamuni, the Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, Chang Yumo, members of the second protection team for the Buddha Tooth Relic from China, representatives from the Thai Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, as well as tens of thousands of people, all gathering at Sanam Luang Square to participate in the grand event and offer their prayers for the New Year.
At the beginning of the ceremony, the Deputy Supreme Patriarch, Somdet phra maharatchamongkhonlamuni, the representative of the Chinese Buddhist Protection Team, Master Keqian, and government representatives from both China and Thailand each offered floral tributes to the Buddha Tooth Relic. Following this, the Deputy Supreme Patriarch, Somdet phra maharatchamongkhonlamuni delivered a blessing, praying for peace and prosperity for both China and Thailand as the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations approaches. Buddhist monks from both the Thai and Southern Thai traditions chanted prayers on-site. As the countdown to the New Year began, tens of thousands of people joyfully chanted in unison. Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol struck the auspicious bell nine times, and the Chinese and Thai monks together recited the auspicious sutra. The sound of the bell and the chanting resonated through the air, welcoming the arrival of 2025.
Thailand has a long-standing tradition of hosting New Year's Eve prayer ceremonies. The 2025 ceremony was specially held at Sanam Luang Square in Bangkok, where the Buddha Tooth Relic from Beijing Lingguang Temple was temporarily enshrined. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand, the ceremony prayed for peace, prosperity, and the happiness and well-being of the people in both countries.
