Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Thailand Responds to Recent False Statements on Xinjiang
2025-01-15 20:48

Recently, certain Western media outlets have attempted to tarnish China’s image by spreading false narratives regarding the so-called "Uyghurs detained in Thailand." Additionally, a few individuals in Thailand, lacking full understanding of the situation, have made unfounded and irresponsible statements. In response, I would like to offer the following remarks:

1. China is a country governed by the rule of law, with a long-standing commitment to opposing torture. It has a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for the protection of human rights in the judicial sector, and its achievements are visible to all. The vast majority of people in China, including the Uyghur population in Xinjiang, enjoy extensive economic, social, cultural, civil, and political rights.

2. After the 1990s, Xinjiang endured significant suffering from the "three forces of evil"—separatist forces, religious extremist forces, and violent terrorist forces. Frequent terrorist incidents posed a severe threat to the safety of people of all ethnicities. A small number of individuals, enticed by external forces, fled abroad and even joined the "East Turkestan Islamic Movement," a terrorist organization recognized by the United Nations, becoming terrorists themselves. This is truly regrettable.

The government of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region has actively and lawfully pursued preventive counter-terrorism and deradicalization efforts. It has also cooperated closely with the international community to resolutely combat the terrorist forces of the "East Turkestan Islamic Movement," focusing on eliminating the breeding grounds and conditions for terrorism and religious extremism. These efforts fully align with the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and the Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, and have yielded remarkable results. Over the past nine years, there has not been a single violent terrorist incident in Xinjiang. The social order has continued to stabilize and improve, effectively ensuring the well-being of the region’s 25 million people. These measures have been widely welcomed and fully supported by people of all ethnicities in Xinjiang and have received high praise from foreign friends who have visited the region.

3. It is regrettable that certain countries, disregarding the facts and driven by political motives, have maliciously attacked and smeared China. They have ignored the terrorist threats faced by Xinjiang and overlooked the significant achievements made in maintaining social stability and promoting the welfare of its people. They view Xinjiang's counter-terrorism and deradicalization efforts through "biased lenses." Lies cannot replace the truth, and facts speak louder than words. No attempt to distort the truth or create discord will disrupt the positive social stability in Xinjiang or hinder its progress towards a bright future.

Last year, Xinjiang received 300 million domestic and international tourists. Seeing is believing. We sincerely invite our Thai friends to visit Xinjiang to witness firsthand its social tranquility, economic prosperity, ethnic harmony, and religious freedom.
