Ambassador Han Zhiqiang: It is the U.S. that provokes troubles. It is the U.S. that creates crises. And it is the U.S. that escalates tensions.

On August 10, 2022, Ambassador Han Zhiqiang delivered a speech at the Assumption University of Thailand. Talking about the Taiwan question, Ambassador Han said that Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi made a provocative visit to China's Taiwan region in disregard of China's strong opposition and publicly declared that the United States would vigorously develop U.S.-Taiwan Relations and defend Taiwan. Taiwan has been an integral part of China's territory since ancient times. From the historical context, to the resolutions of the United Nations, to the reality that 181 countries in the world, including the United States, recognize the one-China principle, Taiwan is part of China's territory, and the Taiwan question is China's internal affairs. This is a clear and an indisputable fact. The U.S., on the one hand, recognizes that Taiwan is a part of China’s territory, but on the other hand, claims that it will protect Taiwan's security. What an absurd and hegemonic logic! As a matter of fact, the United States is inciting and supporting Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to pursue Taiwan independence and separatism in order to achieve its criminal purpose of "using Taiwan to contain China". This is a serious harm to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, a breach of the United States' own international commitments, and a trampling on international law and the basic norms of international relations. In this regard, China must make strong responses and countermeasures. We conducted military exercises in the waters near Taiwan to resolutely respond to and counter U.S. provocations. It is a legitimate action to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a just act to resist the U.S. side's wanton trampling on other countries' sovereignty and to maintain regional peace and tranquility. The United States has done bad things by itself, and now it is playing the trick of a thief crying "Stop thief!" and spreading rumors that China changes the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and affect regional stability. In fact, instigating the Taiwan authorities to seek independence and split China's territorial sovereignty is truly changing the status quo. It is the United States that provokes troubles. It is the United States that creates crises. And it is the United States that escalates tensions. The United States has waged wars all over the world, created turmoil and crises in various regions, ignored international law and the norms of international relations for maintaining its hegemonic status, and caused untold sufferings, devastations and life losses in countless countries. The United States has become the largest trouble maker in the world.
